“Shameless Ashes” discusses the theme of arson as a form of “clearing” terrain or ending certain relationships. Often, the motives for such “incidents” include investment goals or the settlement of financial or personal matters.
The work examines those aspects of human behavior in which social and political realities are defined by a lack of shame, remorse, or guilt. Various “fiery” conflicts are ignited here, which destroy both material and immaterial values. Acts of arson against public buildings or cultural monuments, forest fires and the burning of fields, as well as vehicles, are part of this destructive pattern of action.
The artwork uses charred pieces of wood and debris that remained after the fire in the Dragoman Marsh in January 2020, which can still be found at the site. In this fire, 80 % of the marsh"s vegetation was destroyed.
The project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the BALKANI Wildlife Society. With their assistance, the burnt metal door from the bird-watching tower at Dragoman Marsh was dismantled. Unfortunately, due to the fire, the tower can no longer be used and is set to be fully demolished.
